Prior to its current conflict, Sudan was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to continued political instability and economic insecurity. Since civil war erupted in April 2023, the situation has only worsened, leading to societal collapse and mass displacement. Over 12 million people have fled their homes, with over 3 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
Even once arriving in countries like Egypt, many Sudanese remain vulnerable due to a lack of opportunities and resources. The refugee registration process is long-winded and uncertain, with minimal support available even if registration is successful. Children are particularly vulnerable as single mothers struggle to provide. Lacking education, they wander aimlessly and end up on the streets. The few schools available for refugees have poor facilities and educational standards, hindering students from developing essential academic skills.
